Dear DYA Community and Supporters,
In light of the continued impact of COVID-19, I write to inform you that the DYA Alumni Gathering and Celebration scheduled for June 26 – 27, 2020, will be postponed until fall. Regrettably, the 2020 Duke Youth Academy residency and year-long student programming has been canceled. This was not an easy decision for University officials to make but was necessary to protect the well-being of all students and staff. To that end, all summer programs involving minors at Duke University have been canceled.
Each year, the Duke Youth Academy attracts diverse young people who are actively involved in their churches and community, impassioned about following God and are incredibly thoughtful and wise. These young people compose of nearly every demographic of race, sexual orientation, denominational affiliation, and geographical location. The DYA class of 2020 was no less talented and diverse. We, the DYA staff, and I grieve the lost opportunity for our community, young people and staff, to convene in worship, to share in meals and laughter, and to imagine the church and ourselves anew.
While we grieve the canceling of DYA 2020, the Duke Youth Academy will host a DYA Celebration of DYA students, alumni, and staff in the fall. A team of volunteers and staff have begun preliminary work towards this celebration. We hope you will consider joining us to celebrate and remember the 20-year legacy of the Duke Youth Academy. More specific details are forthcoming.
Finally, I invite you to join us in prayer for our students and staff as we grieve the cancellation of DYA 2020 and seek to continue our journey of faith.
If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding the Duke Youth Academy, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call our office at 919-613-5323.
With sincere regards,
Director of the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation
